No-Detention Policy Scrapped for Classes 5 & 8
Centre Ends 'No-Detention Policy' for Classes 5 and 8
The Central Government has scrapped the 'no-detention policy' for Classes 5 and 8 in over 3,000 schools it governs, including Kendriya Vidyalayas, Navodaya Vidyalayas, and Sainik Schools. This change allows schools to hold back students who fail their year-end exams.
Key Points:
Re-Exam Opportunity: Students who fail annual exams will receive additional coaching and can retake the exam within two months.
Guidance for Improvement: If they fail again, they will repeat the grade, with teachers providing specialised inputs to address learning gaps.
No Expulsion: No child will be expelled from school until they complete elementary education.
This policy aligns with an amendment to the Right to Education (RTE) Act in 2019, and 16 states along with 2 Union Territories have already adopted it. States like Haryana and Puducherry have yet to decide, while others continue with the no-detention policy.
The decision emphasizes accountability and aims to improve educational outcomes by identifying and addressing learning deficiencies early.
